The Roots of Music believes music has the power to transform lives. They empower the youth of New Orleans through music education, academic support, and mentorship, while preserving and promoting the unique musical and cultural heritage of the city. The Roots of Music was created in 2007 during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, by Derrick Tabb of the Rebirth Brass Band. The Roots of Music stays true to their name: they are the roots of music education and culture in New Orleans. From its humble beginnings as a six-week drum camp at Tipitina’s to three programs and full wrap-around support services, The Roots of Music has held true to the belief that music saves lives.
