Los Cenzontles
2006 JERRY GARCIA AWARD
Los Cenzontles is a band, a nonprofit organization, a music academy, a community space for youth and families, and a hub for Latino artists – all working in tandem to amplify its Mexican roots here in the Bay Area and beyond.
Los Cenzontles produce original music, videos, and educational tools. They teach classes to hundreds of local youth in traditional Mexican music, dance, and arts and crafts. They host many popular community events throughout the year.
Locally, Los Cenzontles is a second home for many families and a long-standing leader in the Mexican roots revival here in the United States
In memory of Grateful Dead guitarist and founding Rex board member Jerry Garcia, this award is designed to honor and support individuals and groups that work to encourage creativity in young people.
