Mariachi Heritage Foundation
2017 JERRY GARCIA AWARD
This award recognizes the commitment of Mariachi Heritage Foundation (MHF) to implement mariachi music programs in Chicago’s underserved schools with the ultimate goal of advancing student engagement and preserving the importance of culture and identity. MHF offers three mariachi music education programs, including in school, after school and an all-city ensemble program. The MHF education approach encourages students with active arts learning while developing strong social and emotional learning skills, developing an appreciation for culture and increasing community engagement.
In memory of Grateful Dead guitarist and founding Rex board member Jerry Garcia, this award is designed to honor and support individuals and groups that work to encourage creativity in young people.
