2025 REX FOUNDATION GRANT RECIPIENT
Roots of American Music uses live music — rooted in early blues, jazz, country, folk, gospel and rock — to educate, inspire and comfort people in settings where exposure to music performance is limited or nonexistent. In addition to providing free community performances, they deliver educational programs in K-12 schools, as well as, performing and sharing stories at residential communities serving seniors and adult day communities serving the physically and evelopmentally challenged.
They create performance and teaching opportunities for many dedicated local performing and teaching artists who share the stories and songs of American roots musicians and songwriters. Their commitment to arts-integrated programming ensures that music becomes a powerful pathway to both academic success and emotional well-being, while playing forward the legacies of the diverse fathers and mothers of American roots music.
The Blues Is the Backbone program is a cross-curricular, nine-week education program developed and instructed by Roots of American Music teaching artists and offered to kindergarten and second grade students, reinforcing language arts, music and social emotional learning. The program is taught through the exploration of early blues musicians, history and culture. 2024-25: 12 schools 32 classes 700 students
