The Afghan Institute of Learning (AIL) believes in a community based tailored, holistic approach that: raises the literacy rate, teaches job skills enabling women to contribute to their families and communities, ensures women and children are safe and know their rights, provides access to health care, education, legal aid and food aid and promotes Afghan culture and peace.
The Sakena Fund (formerly known as Creating Hope International) is a non-profit organization with 501(c)(3) status in the USA. Its goal is to assist foreign organizations that work at the grass roots level providing education, healthcare and community development. Sakena Fund is the fiscal sponsor for the Afghan Institute of Learning, and supports Dr. Sakena Yacoobi’s private health, education and media enterprises in Afghanistan. Sakena Fund also contributes to other NGOs.
In memory of pioneering producer and founding Rex board member Bill Graham, himself a refugee, this award is for those working to assist children who are victims of political oppression and human rights violations.
