2023 REX FOUNDATION GRANTEE
Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club, healing individuals and community through equine experience. We are a group of volunteers who believe in the healing power of horses. We work to provide free access to horses and horsemanship lessons to youth in our program. The youth we serve are primarily Black teenagers, though we are open to all who wish to learn. Our non-profit is located on Fletcher Street in the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood of North Philadelphia. Despite all odds, we remain a safe haven for our community, carrying on a century long tradition of Black horsemanship within the most historic city in America. Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club was founded by Ellis “El Dog” Ferrell Jr. in 2004. His son, Darrin Ferrell, along with others he has taught to ride, are carrying on the mission of the club. Our kids learn to ride on vacant lots and city streets, but we believe horses can take you anywhere.
