Human Needs Project
2018 BILL GRAHAM AWARD
Human Needs Project is a nonprofit engine that creates social enterprises in slums. HNP builds Town Centres, which are “infrastructure for opportunity”—both physical infrastructure for clean water and sanitation, and social infrastructure that provides information, skills training, access to credit and computers, and community ownership. These Town Centres are social enterprises that are financially and environmentally self-sustaining, and they serve as platforms that bring knowledge, expertise and networks into the slums. HNP’s pilot centre is in Kibera, Nairobi, Kenya, one of the continent’s largest slums.
In memory of pioneering producer and founding Rex board member Bill Graham, himself a refugee, this award is for those working to assist children who are victims of political oppression and human rights violations.
