2023 REX FOUNDATION GRANTEE
Established in the fall of 2018, the NOLA Grannies are a group of grassroots volunteers who meet and assist legal asylum-seeking immigrants released from detention as they pass through the bus station in New Orleans, Louisiana on their way to their sponsors, where they will pursue their immigration cases. NOLA Grannies provide snacks, drinks, hygiene products, toys, baby needs, clothing, blankets, help with understanding confusing bus tickets, and, perhaps most importantly, human contact, warm smiles, and caring hugs. NOLA Grannies are associated with Grannies Respond, a national organization that provides and elicits compassion and respectful support for asylum seekers and immigrants who are seeking safety and security in the United States.
