Trombone Shorty Academy Checks In

Last year, 2022 Ralph J. Gleason Award recipient the Trombone Shorty Foundation sent some amazing young musicians  from the Trombone Shorty Academy to our December celebration at the Fillmore. It was a triumphant, uplifting experience we’ll never forget.

Trombone Shorty Academy is an after-school music program, where youth from New Orleans schools gather weekly to learn the cultural traditions of New Orleans, including contemporary brass band music, from Artist Educators from the Soul Rebels, Rebirth Brass Band, and New Breed Brass Band. Youth receive hands-on ensemble instruction, with consistent feedback and coaching from the Academy’s Artist Educators.

Artist Educators work with the Academy’s programs each week to support the passing of musical knowledge to young people. They are full-time working musicians who are able to not only share the insight they’ve learned from working in the music field, but share different approaches to learning more contemporary brass band music. The Academy’s more tenured students have the opportunity to travel during an annual class trip, where they learn from professional musicians and industry professionals across the U.S.
