Return to the Greek
With Rex!
We are thrilled to announce our return to the Greek Theatre for two nights, July 31 and August 1, for a Rex Foundation benefit titled The Music Never Stops: A Tribute to Bob Weir. These shows are important for two reasons. First, we pay tribute to Bob as a founding board member of Rex and a staunch advocate for grants that support the preservation of our precious resources, voter registration efforts, and innovative arts programs. Second, Bob was emphatic that the music of the Grateful Dead would continue to be performed by current and future generations of musicians; he enjoyed sitting in with Dark Star and, based on the example they set, was confident his goal would be achieved. These shows reflect our desire to carry forward Bob’s vision.
Both nights will be headlined by Dark Star Orchestra, a longtime supporter of Rex dating back to their first benefit for Rex at the Warfield on April 13, 2002. DSO has not only committed to perfecting the Grateful Dead’s nuanced sound but has also made an equally powerful statement through their consistent support of Rex. We thank them profusely on both counts!
On Friday, July 31, Dark Star Orchestra invites Melvin Seals & JGB to open the show as special guests. Melvin Seals performed alongside Garcia for more than 15 years, helping define the soulful, gospel-infused sound that became a hallmark of JGB. The band will also be joined by the highly acclaimed Jazz Mafia Horn Section, featuring Mike Olmos on trumpet, Tommy Occhiuto on saxophone, and Adam Theis on trombone. Having played with many Grateful Dead-adjacent musicians, the Jazz Mafia is a great addition to pump up the funk that Jerry loved.
On Saturday, August 1, Dark Star Orchestra, well known for their show recreations, will perform a show from Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, New Jersey, on August 1, 1973 (the first of three times the Grateful Dead performed on Jerry’s birthday). Peter Rowan with the Sam Grisman Project will open the show. Peter was a founding member of the seminal bluegrass collective “Old and In the Way,” alongside Jerry Garcia. The Sam Grisman Project, led by the son of legendary mandolinist David Grisman, continues their tradition by celebrating the timeless sound.
We look forward to an incredible weekend at the Greek in appreciation of Bob and all he shared with us, celebrating our community, the music that brings us together, and the spirit of generosity that shows up whenever we gather!
