1. Shelter Animals to Benefit from Emerson Elementary School's Penny Roundup Faciliated by Good Cents for Oakland
Staff and volunteers at the Oakland Animal Shelter have something to celebratea charitable donation from Oakland school children. On Monday, students from Emerson Elementary in Oakland and Good Cents for Oakland, a non-profit organization, presented Friends of the Oakland Animal Shelter with a check for $722.47.
The children raised these funds as part of Good Cents for Oakland's Penny Roundup program. Good Cents empowers and inspires Oakland's preschool through eighth grade school children to engage in community service through penny drives. The Good Cents for Oakland Penny Roundup Program gives children the opportunity to direct 100% of the funds they raise to their schools and other local charities of their choice under the guidance of their teachers and program facilitators.
The students from Emerson chose Friends of the Oakland Animal Shelter to receive their grant after listening to presentations from several animal welfare organizations in the community. Funds will be used to supplement care for the health and happiness of the thousands of animals handled each year by the shelter.
"It's wonderful to know that the children of Emerson care about animals,” said Willow Liroff co-founder and board president of Friends of the Oakland Animal Shelter. “We are truly honored by the efforts of Emerson Elementary School children and the Penny Roundup Program that Good Cents for Oakland makes possible."
