Performance Rehearsal

ALICE is a grassroots organization that teaches literacy and celebrates cultural diversity through the arts in Bay Area grades K-5.  ALICE was founded on the principle that the arts are essential to every child’s learning and that all children deserve an arts-integrated education, regardless of racial, socio-economic or ethnic background.  The organization provides artist residencies that integrate visual and performing arts directly into public school curricula and produces performances and exhibits of children’s work.

The most recent Rex grant helped to expand an innovative Ancestor project to schools in Oakland’s Fruitvale district.  ALICE created the project as the result of a community wide performance piece, My Heart Comes From My Ancestors.  The play was based on oral histories of elders collected by third graders.  The program is profoundly meaningful to the lives of the children and to their families and communities.  The children learn vital literacy skills and gain a deep understanding of their own cultures and those of others.
