My travels to see the Dead always left me feeling connected, overwhelmed, confused, uplifted, caught in the tide of something greater than myself, swept toward a both lighter and darker place.
When I wrote my novel Freaked, my editor and I talked about where these abstract feelings came from and how best to put them into words. The drugs yes. The music yes. The act of growing up--surely. But we also seemed to be moving toward something beyond even this kind of knowing.
I believe we have seized too much control of our world, that not enough people are invited to let themselves drop away from its concrete borders. Emotional experimentation is scary for parents to watch and yet it breeds independence and revolutionary thought.
Here is to the long strange trip and our barefoot walks into the unknown. Thank you Barbara for a thoughtful and inspiring post.
